The 68-year-old woman was discharged in February following treatment for Covid-19. She tested positive again for coronavirus on August 9.
More than five months after being discharged from a hospital following treatment for coronavirus, a 68-year-old woman in China has tested positive for coronavirus again, alarming health officials and experts.
The woman tested positive at a hospital in Jingzhou in Central China’s Hubei Province.
According to Global Times, a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, the woman had “recovered and was discharged from a local hospital as early as February”.
Speaking about her case, a virologist told Global Times that “rare” cases like these show that the virus probably takes a long time to eliminate from the human body. However, he added that people who test positive again after recovering from Covid-19 are “not infectious”.
As per the media report, the 68-year-old woman tested positive on August 9. At present, she has been put under quarantine. Her close contacts have reportedly tested negative.
“The case indicates that it will take a long time to completely eliminate coronavirus from the human body, and the density of the virus inside this specific patient’s body was low, which may explain why she had tested negative,” Yang Zhanqiu, deputy director of the pathogen biology department at Wuhan University, was quoted as saying by Global Times.
Meanwhile, in a report, the South China Morning Post said while patients testing positive again for coronavirus are common in China and other countries, but this case “may be the longest period a recovered patient has gone before Covid-19 was detected for a second time”.
