Like many other students, the 10-year-old girl was also starting school lessons via Zoom in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Moments into her first zoom class, she witnessed her mother being fatally shot.
A10-year-old girl who had just logged in for her first Zoom class on Tuesday witnessed her mother’s fatal shooting moments after her teacher put her on mute to ‘shield’ other students who had logged in. The shooting occurred at a home in Indiantown in Florida, US.
As soon as the 10-year-old girl logged in for her first Zoom lesson, her teacher at the Warfield Elementary School put her on mute after hearing commotion and cursing in the background, reported The Washington Post. The teacher muted the girl to shield other students who were logged in, added the report.
But moments later, things turned ugly. The teacher saw the girl throw her hands over her ears and the screen suddenly went dark.
It all started off with a heated argument between the little girl’s mother, Maribel Rosado Morales, 32, and her ex-boyfriend Donald J. Williams, 27. What started off with cursing escalated soon and Williams shot Morales multiple times, according to police officers quoted in the report. Morales later died in the hospital.
Williams was taken into custody within an hour and was charged with first-degree murder besides other felony offences, according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
Like many other students, the 10-year-old girl was also starting school lessons via Zoom in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Police said that five other children were in the house and witnessed the killing.
“It’s a sad case, it’s a terrible case and we’re doing the best we can to try to make sense of what occurred, at least forensically,” Snyder told The Washington Post.
The incident occurred just after 8 am on Tuesday when Williams conformed Morales about a video on Facebook. When the argument heated up further, Williams shot Morales multiple times using a gun he had stolen in 2015.
Police also told the publication that the 10-year-old’s computer screen went dark after it was hit by a projectile.
Soon after the incident, one of the children in the house dialled 911 and Morales was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Centre in Fort Pierce, Florida. She was pronounced dead on arrival.
Williams tried to flee but but the driver of the bus he boarded got suspicious and dialled 911. A SWAT team arrived minutes later and took him into custody. He has allegedly confessed to the crime.
