U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh looks on in the East Room of the White House.
With one woman set to testify next week about her allegation of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, another emerged on Sunday with a troubling story of her own.
That’s part of the story Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale classmate of Kavanaugh, recounted to the New Yorker.
The alleged incident took place during the 1983-1984 academic year at a dorm-room party where Ramirez says she was picked on during drinking game.
After becoming inebriated, she says she was foggy-headed and lying on the floor when someone she believes to be Kavanaugh exposed himself with others nearby urging her to “kiss it.” At that point, she pushed him away.
“Brett was laughing,” she told the New Yorker. “I can still see his face, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up your pants.”
She then recalled that another male student shouted down the hall, “Brett Kavanaugh just put his penis in Debbie’s face,’ ” she said. “I remember hearing and being mortified that this was out there.”
Kavanaugh released a statement about the allegation.
“This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen. The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so. This is a smear, plain and simple,” he said. “I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name — and the reputation for character and integrity I have spent a lifetime building — against these last-minute allegations.”
The New Yorker reported that the offices of at least four Democratic senators received word of the allegation, with two of them starting investigations.
The White House responded with support of Kavanaugh.
“This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats designed to tear down a good man,” spokesperson Kerri Kupec said. “This claim is denied by all who were said to be present and is wholly inconsistent with what many women and men who knew Judge Kavanaugh at the time in college say. The White House stands firmly behind Judge Kavanaugh.”
Meanwhile, Christine Blasey Ford, the college professor who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault in a separate incident, will appear on Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to her lawyers.
